Ornex: the family village 10 minutes from Geneva
Ornex is one of those communes in the Pays de Gex that is not talked about much, and this is perhaps precisely what makes it so charming. No casino like in Divonne, no immediate border like Ferney, no castle park like Prévessin. Ornex is above all a village that has managed to maintain a human scale despite its spectacular demographic growth: from 519 inhabitants in 1968 to 4,903 in 2022, a 9.5-fold increase in half a century.

Today, with its estimated 5,170 inhabitants at the beginning of 2026, Ornex appeals to cross-border families looking for the right balance: close enough to Geneva to work comfortably (10 minutes from the border), far enough to escape the hustle and bustle and prohibitive prices of the first border line.

The choice of families who refuse to compromise
When we talk to the inhabitants of Ornex, one word comes up systematically: "balance". Balance between proximity to Geneva and residential tranquility. Balance between affordable property prices (around €5,100-5,800/m² depending on the source) and quality of services. Balance between village life and the dynamism of a growing municipality.
Marie and Thomas, thirty-year-olds who have been living in Ornex since 2022, sum up the state of mind well: "We both worked in Geneva, we rented a small apartment in Ferney. When our second child arrived, we tried to buy. Ferney was out of budget. In Ornex, we found a 110 m² house with a garden for €580,000. The same property in Ferney would have cost us at least €150,000 more. And frankly, the extra 5 minutes to the border, we don't even feel them."

A two-stage geography : the old village and the new districts
Ornex can only be understood by grasping its particular geography. The commune covers 5.6 km² between Ferney-Voltaire to the south, Prévessin-Moëns to the west, Segny and Versonnex to the north, and the Swiss border (commune of Collex-Bossy) to the east.
The historic centre around the Rue de la Mairie and the Rue de Béjoud (where the town hall is located at number 45) retains the charm of a rural village. A few old houses, the church, a peaceful atmosphere. It is the historic centre, where Ornex was still a simple agricultural town fifty years ago.

Real estate in Ornex: understanding a two-speed market
The Ornesian real estate market has a particularity: a significant price difference according to sources. MeilleursAgents announces €5,818/m² in March 2026, Orpi talks about €6,009/m² in 2025, while Déjà Vendu (based on the actual DVF) indicates €5,062/m² for apartments and €5,581/m² for houses.
This dispersion can be explained by the modest size of the market (143 sales over 12 months according to the DVF, compared to only 16 in 2024) and by a strong heterogeneity of the real estate portfolio. Between an old house in need of work and a recent turnkey house, the difference can be as much as €2,000/m².

A daily life designed for families
What is striking about Ornex is that almost everything is thought out on a family scale. The two schools (nursery and elementary) welcome the children of the village. The classes are on a human scale, the teachers know the families, the atmosphere is that of a village school.
For the middle school, head for Prévessin-Moëns (Le Joran College, 4 km) or Gex (Georges Charpak College, 8 km). For the high school, Ferney-Voltaire (Lycée International, 6 km) or Gex (Lycée Jeanne d'Arc).
This "externalization" of secondary schooling is generally not a problem: school buses work well, and many parents drop off their children on their way to work.

Daily commutes: not too close, not too far
One of the major arguments for choosing Ornex remains the accessibility in Geneva. The town is located 9 km from the Swiss border (Bardonnex or Ferney-Moillesulaz customs depending on your destination).
By car, it takes 10 to 15 minutes to reach the border during off-peak hours, 20-25 minutes during border rush hour (7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.). Once in Switzerland, add 10 to 15 minutes depending on your destination in Geneva. Total home-office journey: 25 to 40 minutes depending on the time and destination.

Ornex in one sentence
If we had to sum up Ornex in one sentence: it is the family village par excellence in the Pays de Gex, the one that allows cross-border workers to access property with a garden without breaking the bank, while maintaining a reasonable proximity to Geneva and a quiet and secure living environment to raise their children.
Not the closest, not the most prestigious, not the most lively. But perhaps the most balanced for families who refuse to choose between proximity to Geneva and residential quality of life.
