Working at CERN: where to live in the Pays de Gex?
Have you just been recruited at CERN, or are you thinking of applying? The question of housing in the Pays de Gex immediately arises. With 13 sites spread across France and a 27-kilometre LHC tunnel crossing 9 municipalities, the choice of where you live will have a direct impact on your daily life.
Between Saint-Genis-Pouilly next to the Prévessin site (Point 6), Cessy above Point 5 (CMS detector), and the other border municipalities, each option has its advantages depending on your profile : post-doctoral fellow on a fixed-term contract, senior researcher with family, permanent engineer, or administrative staff. Here is a practical guide to choosing where to live when working at CERN.

Understanding the geography of CERN in the Pays de Gex
The main CERN sites on the French side
CERN has 13 sites in the Pays de Gex, mainly around the access shafts to the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The most important:
Prévessin site (Point 6): CERN's second largest site after Meyrin (Switzerland), straddling Prévessin-Moëns and Saint-Genis-Pouilly. Built in the 1970s with the SPS accelerator. Offices, control rooms, workshops, Restaurant 3, cafeteria. This is where hundreds of CERN employees work every day.
Point 5 (CMS detector): located in Cessy, 100 metres underground. Houses the 12,500-tonne Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector, a generalist experiment that co-discovered the Higgs boson in 2012. On the surface: technical buildings accessible to the teams.
Point 3 : located in Crozet at a depth of 120 metres. Beam monitoring point with deviant particle absorbing collimators.
Point 1 (ATLAS detector): in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, another major experiment that discovered the Higgs.
Main French entrance : in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, 3 km from the city centre, access to the main campus in Meyrin.
Where will you actually work?
- At the Meyrin campus (Switzerland): head office, administrative offices, laboratories
- At the Prévessin site (France): control rooms, workshops, technical offices
- At Experimental Points (CMS, ATLAS, etc.): physicists, detector engineers
Your main place of work largely determines where it is optimal to live.
Saint-Genis-Pouilly : a no-brainer for CERN employees
Maximum proximity to the Prévessin site
Saint-Genis-Pouilly (14,584 inhabitants) is THE CERN commune par excellence. The Prévessin site is located on its territory, the French entrance to the campus is 3 km from the center, and the ATLAS detector (Point 1) is in the immediate vicinity.
Commuting time: 5 to 10 minutes to reach the Prévessin site or the Meyrin entrance. Unbeatable.
An ultra-cosmopolitan population
35.2% of the population is foreign (2017), the highest proportion in the Pays de Gex. More than 60 nationalities represented. This diversity is a direct reflection of CERN's presence: Indian physicists, Italian engineers, British researchers, Spanish technicians, etc.
For international CERN employees arriving from abroad, Saint-Genis offers an immediately familiar environment : you will meet other CERN residents in the supermarket, at your children's school, in the café. This cosmopolitan life facilitates integration.
Services adapted to the international community
Schools with a high proportion of multilingual children, international shops, restaurants from around the world, various cultural associations. The Technoparc is home to 70+ companies , many of which work with CERN.
The price to pay: high real estate cost
Property prices: €4,800 to €5,300/m² (2026). For a 70 m² T3 apartment: €340,000 to €370,000. For a 120 m² house: €580,000 to €640,000.
Tight budget for post-docs or young researchers (CERN post-doc salary ~3,000-4,000 CHF net monthly). More accessible for seniors (CHF >6,000).

Prévessin-Moëns : the cosmopolitan alternative
Directly adjacent to the CERN site
Prévessin-Moëns (9,850 inhabitants) shares the site of Prévessin with Saint-Genis. Travel time: 5 to 12 minutes depending on the district.
37% foreign population, 60+ nationalities: similar profile to Saint-Genis. Many CERN families.
The Castle Park: a family asset
19 hectares of public park in the heart of the town, 400-year-old trees, playgrounds, fitness trail. For families with children, this is a decisive argument.
4 primary schools including ALICE school (280 students), Le Joran middle school on site.
Slightly higher prices in Saint-Genis
€5,100 to €5,700/m² (2026). Slightly more expensive but comparable offer. The choice between Prévessin and Saint-Genis is often a matter of personal preference or real estate opportunities.
Cessy : living above the CMS detector
Point 5 under your feet
Cessy (5,865 inhabitants) is home to Point 5 with the CMS detector. For physicists working on CMS, living in Cessy creates a strong symbolic link: you literally live above your experience.
Travel time to Prévessin site: 10 to 12 minutes. To Meyrin: 15 to 18 minutes.
The anecdote of the World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Web, lived on rue de la Mairie in Cessy while working at CERN (1989-1994). A small local pride for the CERNois living in Cessy.
Affordable prices
- T3 of 70 m²: €310,000 to €350,000 (vs €340-370k in Saint-Genis).
- House 120 m²: €530,000 to €600,000 (vs €580-640k in Saint-Genis).

Chevry : the budget option
The most financially accessible municipality
Chevry (2,798 inhabitants) has the lowest prices in the Pays de Gex border: €4,400 to €5,400/m² , average €4,950/m².
For post-doctoral fellows on a 2-3 year fixed-term contract with a limited budget, Chevry allows access to a family home where Saint-Genis only offers an apartment.
Reasonable proximity to CERN
Distance to the Prévessin site: 6 km, or 8-10 minutes. Acceptable to save €100,000 to €150,000 on the purchase of real estate.
The compromise: village life
A small village of 2,800 inhabitants without cosmopolitan animation. Few services on site. For CERNois, who are looking above all for a controlled budget and are ready to sacrifice their international life, Chevry works.
Ferney-Voltaire : prestige and animation
The historic commune of the Pays de Gex
Ferney-Voltaire (10,300 inhabitants) is not the closest to CERN (10-12 km from the Prévessin site, 15 minutes), but offers other advantages.
Historic city, cultural activities, restaurants, various shops, International High School. For CERNois a senior with a family looking for a refined urban living environment, Ferney is appealing.
High prices
€5,200 to €5,800/m² (2026). Substantial budget required. Reserved for wealthy profiles (experienced researchers, permanent staff).

Gex : public services and value for money
The administrative capital
Gex (13,912 inhabitants), sub-prefecture, concentrates public services: hospital, administration, shops. For families with children, the presence of the Collège Georges Charpak and the nearby Lycée Jeanne d'Arc are assets.
CERN distance: 10 km Prévessin site (12-15 minutes).
Best value for money
€4,400 to €5,000/m² (2026). Similar prices to Cessy or Chevry but with all the services of a city centre.
For CERN families looking for a balance between affordability and quality of service, Gex ticks a lot of boxes.

The guide according to your profile

The decisive selection criteria
Duration of the contract
Short fixed-term contract (1-3 years): prefer to rent, maximum proximity (Saint-Genis, Prévessin), don't look for the ideal house.
Permanent contract or long contract : purchase possible, expand your scope (Gex, Cessy, Ornex), think long-term (schools, retirement).
Family situation
Single/couple without children : small apartment Saint-Genis, cosmopolitan life, close to bars/restaurants.
Family with children : house with garden, international schools (Prévessin, Saint-Genis), Parc du Château (Prévessin).
Budget
<400k€ : Chevry, Cessy, Ornex, Versonnex (apartments or small houses)
400-600k€ : Gex, Cessy, Saint-Genis (T3-T4 apartments), Prévessin (small houses)
€>600k : Saint-Genis, Prévessin, Ferney (family homes), Divonne (prestige)
